Notes: I'm posting this vid now because I just didn't think we had enough angst at the end of the season... *cries*

But I am so happy with the way this vid turned out. I had a lot of fun making it, and the massive thirty something page word doc I had as a plan probably helped a lot with that in the sense that it cut down last minute problems. And hell, I even had fun planning out that word doc for the vid and matching all the clips up.

However, I do have to thank [livejournal.com profile] waldorph who inspired me to make this vid by suggesting the song idea in an Inspiration post on [livejournal.com profile] spn_sceneit (and thanks to that comm as well, it's awesome). So this vid can be dedicated to you because I wouldn't have made this, nor had as much fun making it if you hadn't put the idea in my head first.

I also ramble on more about my vid-making process here.

I have no words right now. You have rendered me completely and utterly speechless. This was so beautifully crafted, and just utterly gorgeous. I love that it focuses almost entirely on Sam and Dean as children and teenagers, and the imagery you use is just so immensely powerful... just seriously, so much love for this vid.

though i've checked there 15 times
That's extremely well edited. I really like how Sam and Dean grown up are barely in the vid at all and their faces are obstructed or distorted when they are. Very cool idea of keeping the on them when they were younger, yet still hinting at their grown up lives within the show.

Re: though i've checked there 15 times
Thank you :) The obscuring of faces was something I tried to focus on so I'm glad that worked for you.

That is *nifty*. The focus on the boys as their younger, (vaguely) more innocent selves really nails the horror of their lives, the burdens they carry and their inheritance of FUBARedness. *g* Very well done!

Oh, so fantastic! A whole vid focused on the Winchesters when they were young, hinting at the future they're going to face. *wibbles* The shots you used were very effective.

Thank you :)

I think there is going to be a lot of *wibbling* around this fandom for a while.

Wow. Wow! That was just incredible. It brought a tear to my eye. Seeing their innocence juxtaposed to their future. It hurt hun. As does our delightful show.

This is so well constructed and such a just perfect way show the Winchester story.

I loved it. What an amazing song. Amazing vid too. Congrats.

That was great! I'm very impressed by how interesting and dynamic you kept this, even though there is limited footage of young Sam and Dean. Fun, but also creepy and atmospheric and slightly sad and nostalgic.
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on May 16th, 2009 09:36 am (UTC)
Thank you :)

In a way limited footage is easier because it forces you to really look at the clips you have and what the best way to use them is.

What a powerful and thoughtful vid about Sam and Dean as kids/teenagers and the monsters they face! The focus on their younger selves makes the burden and horrors of hunting that much more intense.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_sharvie_/ on May 15th, 2009 12:52 pm (UTC)
Very awesome! Loved how much you showcased them as kids. It really nailed the horror of their young lives, especially juxtaposed against a seemingly upbeat song. Nicely done.

I can't believe I've never heard it before. I'm boggling no one did a BtVS vid to it. *lol*

Also, I'm a behind the scenes gal, so your notes about this helpful word doc interest me. Do you have a set structure for it? Or was it more a scratch pad? I was hoping you'd go into more detail about using it, if you don't mind.

Again, wonderful vid!
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on May 16th, 2009 09:35 am (UTC)
Thankyou :D

I happy to talk about the word doc I use. Essentially, it's just the lyrics of the song typed out with the relative clips for each line written underneath.

Generally, with vids I make I only have a vague idea of where clips should go beforehand. I'll have some main ideas, like with this vid I know I wanted to contrast Dean picking up the gun in Something Wicked with the YED getting shot in AHBL. And I'll know the main idea or narrative of the vid, for example with this one, I wanted to contrast Sam and Dean as young kids with all the horrors of hunting, like a nightmare if you will. But the rest of the clip placement I have no clue so I find that if I have a word doc with everything laid out I am better able to figure out what clips should go where and how to relate clips together.

And I found that if I don't have the vid planned out and just vid on the fly then I get a vid that's less cohesive. There have been some exceptions to this which I can go into if you want but generally if I have a plan the vid goes smoother, since I can listen to the song, read through my notes and see the vid playing in my head before I get bogged down in all the technical editing.

So with this vid, to go into more detail, what I did was get the lyrics to the song like I said above and marked in all the main clip ideas that I had. Then what I do is write down a list of clips that I think will be useful for the vid. Which can be tedious but it works for me. SO for this vid I was looking for things related to childhood like toys, monsters related to kids, etc. And I was also looking for clips where you couldn't see people's faces especially adults. So keeping those things in mind I was able to come up with a long list of clips that I could use. Then I grouped them into related clips or clips I wanted to contrast against each other and began placing them against the lyrics. Sometimes I print things out and hand write them in but that just depends on the mood I'm in.

So finally I have a word doc with my vid all planned out. This helps me with a few other things. It give me a list of clips that I need to rip, since the way I write the clips means I can sort alphabetically and have a list of clips from each episode in sequential order. It also means that theoretically I won't have to stop in the middle of vidding to rip more clips since I have ripped all the clips I need beforehand. Since once I start actually placing the clips in the vid I don't want to stop. And it also means that when I start vidding I can see how the final vid is working as whole because I know what's going to happen in the parts of the song I haven't placed clips or edited them.

Sometimes my final vid will change from the plan. I delete clips or remember a better one to use. But I just find having a vid planned out completely means I can look at the vid as a whole and see what's working and what's not.

And whoa, I rambled on a lot but you did say you wanted detail :P But if you want to actually see the word doc I used for this vid then I'll be happy to upload it somewhere for you.
