Rant against the wave of hate against Katie Leung
Okay, is anyone else disgusted by the wave of hate directed against Katie Leung who will play Cho Chang in Goblet of Fire?

I was browsing through my phone because I was bored (as you do ;) and I came across this article from The Age. I then searched around and found this piece from HPANA and this one from the Daily Record

Basically the articles say that HP fans already hate Katie (even though she's an unknown actress and we haven't even seen her in GOF) because they are jealous of the role she plays and they don't like the way she looks. Not only have hate websites sprung up but fake websites that apparently consist of her thoughts and opinions but also include photographs that are supposed to be Katie (though they obviously aren't) in revealing poses. And there are hundreds of messages left by people detailing the ways they hate Katie (even though they don't know her) and criticising her looks and asian background.

Is anyone else really, really disturbed by this? It almost makes you ashamed to be a fan of HP if it means being linked to these kind of people. Firstly, I don't think it is possible to hate someone who haven't met, unless of course you are childish and pathetic, you may not have good feelings about someone but hate is far too strong a word. Also, hating someone because you don't like the way they look is bigoted, racist and stupid considering we supposedly live in a tolerant world (I use supposedly loosely). And secondly, does anyone else see the pure idiocy of hating an actress because she is playing a character that we are even yet to see? Yes, she is playing Cho Chang. You may not like the character but in case you haven't heard, Katie is not Cho. Katie is an actress, she is here to do a job. Yes, Katie will be kissing Daniel Radcliffe. I understand as a fan of Dan you may not like that. However, it's in the plot. If you don't like it, go complain to JKR. Neither Katie nor Dan wrote the story so do not blame them for it. Even if you had your way and Katie is gotten rid of that does not mean you would be kissing Dan instead. Another actress would be hired and then you would go on to hate her and the viscious cycle continues.

There is also an official hate listing for Katie which I refuse to link to but listed there are the reasons why the creator hates Katie. They are:

- she doesn't match at all what Cho Chang should look like, in my opinion.

- she's going to be playing a role that most would kill for.

- she doesn't look very friendly, but of course, she could be very nice and we'll never know for sure.

- she gets the chance to meet some people that most of us would just die to meet, and she gets the oppurtunity of a lifetime. who wouldn't be jealous of that?

In rebuttal:

- Again, JKR wrote the story not you. So you have no idea how Cho is supposed to look.

- so what? I'm sure many people would kill to have played the role of Frodo or Luke Skywalker. Don't hate the person who ends up getting that role because the movie making people decided that is what they wanted.

- doesn't look friendly? No, I don't imagine she would considering she has legions of people who hate her and any photos that you have seen of her were probably taken when she was feeling harassed as the media was camped outside her house. However, I am glad you have enough intelligence to admit Katie could be nice. I'll give you a point for that, however I am just going to take it away again because that fact obviously doesn't matter to you.

- yes, good for her. I would be jealous of her myself. That doesn't mean I open A FUCKING HATE WEBSITE!

It's these type of people that really get to me. You don't even know the poor girl yet you're already condemning her. Dan himself was quoted as describing her as "awesome" and "very pretty and cool". Sounds to me like she may actually be a good person. Surprising, I know, but there you go.

Any comments/discussions would be welcome because this type of things really angers me.

I'm a little confused why people would go to the trouble of setting up the website just because of the above reasons. I mean, if you really hate her, why are you taking the time to set up a website about her?

And yes, all of the "reasons" are rather foolish and stupid. It's like, dude, get a grip, it's only a movie/book/fandom. Make like Shatner and get a life.
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 05:42 am (UTC)
I know, and it's a pretty well designed website. One that a fairly smart person would of had to have set up so I can't understand why they have such pathetic reasons.
[identity profile] wtfbrain.livejournal.com on April 26th, 2005 01:46 pm (UTC)
I guess people just have too much time on their hands. Alas, what can you do? That kind of stupidity isn't curable.
[identity profile] di-br.livejournal.com on April 24th, 2005 02:44 pm (UTC)
This is just too stupid for words... hating an actress just because she's playing a role other people want to play because she'll get to be Harry Potter Daniel Radcliffe's onscreen love interest!
So maybe she doesn't match everyone's idea of Cho, but then again lots of people imagined a different Sirius, a different Remus, hell even a different Harry! No one has ever even seen a picture of Katie dressed up as Cho and those people already hate her for playing her!

- she's going to be playing a role that most would kill for.

As if no one wanted to play Harry, Hermione or Ron or any HP character...

- she gets the chance to meet some people that most of us would just die to meet, and she gets the oppurtunity of a lifetime. who wouldn't be jealous of that?

Ok, then you should build up a hate website for Daniel Radcliffe instead! He's met many of the world's best actors (from England at least) and became an instant celebrity.

This is just so childish and stupid...
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 05:45 am (UTC)
If we had seen her playing Cho and it was really bad or whatever, then maybe... maybe I could see some people hating her for messing up her role (even though I would still think it stupid). But we haven't even seen her yet!

Ok, then you should build up a hate website for Daniel Radcliffe instead! He's met many of the world's best actors (from England at least) and became an instant celebrity.

Ahh, but see these are the people who love Dan and they wouldn't dream of hating him for the exact same reasons they hate someone else. Illogical reasoning is what these people are famous for.

Very true. I was just trying to show how illogical it was. Basically their reason is "I won't let anyone else kiss Dan but my selfish self!". Period.
[identity profile] incroyable.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 03:30 am (UTC)
This just makes me all around angry in so many ways - not what you wrote, mind, just all of this hate fansite stuff. I don't understand it and I just want to scream at all of them to GET A FUCKING LIFE. If you're going to hate everyone that you're jealous of you're going to be an extremely unliked and unpleasent person.

Hrmmph.
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 05:48 am (UTC)
At least, if you're going to hate someone, have a damn good reason for it, not the piss poor reasoning they came up with.
[identity profile] incroyable.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 05:52 am (UTC)
Really.

(here from hogwarts_today)

Page three of The West Australian today was an article about the Katie hate. It made me so mad, and ashamed to be a HP fan. Fucking idiot fangirls.
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 05:40 am (UTC)
Damn, we don't have that one. Did it have any new info?
[identity profile] psycho-llama.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 06:17 am (UTC)
"Harry Potter's choice of girlfriend has set off a global internet backlash with ugly racial overtones."

blah blah, basic info on Katie
hate sites been established, "criticism of her looks and Asiatic background"

direct quote from some chat girl- "Katie is a beast. She looks like a monster, not the love interest of my Daniel Radcliffe!"

people asking whether or not she can "speak English" (EDIT- this just fucking pisses me off. she's scottish you fuckwits. just because she's of asian descent doesn't mean she can't speak english.)

Katie's father Peter- "No one knows her, has seen her or heard her speak, yet there are all these things on the internet. She reads them all and it is a great pressure on her."

Daniel Radcliffe- apparently enthusiastic about Katie, describing her as "very pretty and cool."
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:08 pm (UTC)
K, pretty much the same stuff that I've seen already. Thanks.

people asking whether or not she can "speak English" (EDIT- this just fucking pisses me off. she's scottish you fuckwits. just because she's of asian descent doesn't mean she can't speak english.)

I agree. In case people hadn't realised, she did actually get the role and if she couldn't speak english then I hardly think she would have been hired. Obviously she is what the producers were looking otherwise they would have picked someone else.
[identity profile] thrupenny.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 06:47 am (UTC)
(also here from hogwarts_today)

I agree with everything you said. I read the article in HPANA and couldn't believe people could be so stupid and ignorant. I mean, none of these criticisms hold any water, but I especially don't get how these fuckwits missed that Cho Chang would be played by a girl of asian appearance. How can she possibly be 'too asian-looking'?

I've read speculation that her dad PAID the GoF producers off to get her in the film. I don't even know where to start with idiocy like that.

Ugh, the whole thing just disgusts me beyond words.
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:11 pm (UTC)
People think her dad paid off the producers? He must have paid a pretty fucking lot considering those producers must have made heaps from the previous films. I agree, you just can't fight idiotic statements like that without your head blowing up from the stupidity.
[identity profile] thrupenny.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:28 pm (UTC)
He must have paid a pretty fucking lot considering those producers must have made heaps from the previous films.

That's exactly what I thought. And I'm so sure they would jeopardise a huge cash-cow like the HP franchise by hiring any old person who could afford to bribe them.
[identity profile] greencookie.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 07:18 am (UTC)
Hate those people. Love Katie. Hate Cho. Will start a love Katie website.

Hmmm, it just surprises me
that many writers didn't cotton on to the fact that the object of Harry's affection was Chinese... and this was from GoF. Cho Chang as an entity was around from PoA. Some of the comments online have pissed me off big stylie (these were along the lines of 'y'mean, she's a minority?' or 'Harry likes that kind of girl? Why?').

A lot of caucasions do ask me what is the appeal in Harry Potter for me (a minority) so I've always gotten the feeling (from some people) that it should have been a series for whites.

*shrug*
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:25 pm (UTC)
Re: Hmmm, it just surprises me
That's probably because it's never actually mentioned specifically (at least none that I can remember so correct me on that if I'm wrong). I know it said Cho had dark skin and hair but I don't think she is decribed further than that besides Harry thinking her pretty.

I never figured HP being a series for anyone, white or otherwise. One of my good friends is of asian descent while I'm white and we both love the books just as much. To me Harry Potter is a story, a story I love and treasure, but I never thought it was intended for anyone. The fact that Harry liked a girl of asian descent was never an issue with me. It was just, he likes Cho Chang, good for him and that was that.

Though it is kinda ironic that these people are objecting to Cho or Katie because she is supposedly a minority, yet the whole HP series is revolving around a war to defeat a character who is discriminating against people based on where they came from ie. their blood. Voldemort is supposed to be the evil villian and when you think about it, these people are acting just like him.

Re: Hmmm, it just surprises me
Wow I'm confused... or maybe some people are just dense, I mean... Isn't Chang a dead giveaway that Cho is Chinese? (well she could be Korean, but Chang would be really rare Korean last name)

The only Chinese name I've ever heard where you could mix up the person's nationality is 'Young'.

~~~
I wonder what people were expecting... I mean, *snort* people don't think all Chinese girls are supposed to look like Zhang Zihyi and be all demure and slavish, do they?
*walks off laughing my head off*
Fangirls are so stupid. Uhh. I can't think of anything useful to say, just oh for fucks sake. I mean, so she's getting the chance to do something you'd love to do. And? If one of these fangirls had got the part they'd be showing off like anything themselves.
And she doesn't look very friendly? Well neither do I, but I'm a cuddly, fluffy, bunny inside.
If I'm going to hate celebrities at least I do it for a good reason. Okay, that's a lie, but at least I don't make a website and promote hate, I just bitch to my friends about how annoying Natasha Kaplinsky is, and how she's the world's worst and stupidest newsreader.
It amazes me sometimes how many conversations I can actually turn onto the subject of my Natasha Kaplinsky-hate. Sorry.
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:26 pm (UTC)
There is nothing useful to say to stupidity like that except grr, argh and stabbity.
And she doesn't look very friendly? Well neither do I, but I'm a cuddly, fluffy, bunny inside.
Oh god, that plot bunny really got to you, didn't it?
[identity profile] kabeyk.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:36 pm (UTC)
Heh. Yes indeed, it is eating me up.
Stabbity-stabbity stab stab stab to the hate-filled fangirls. Who put the 'fang' in fangirls all of a sudden?
kx
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:40 pm (UTC)
Stabbity with a spork.
And I never realised the fang in 'fangirl'. Oh, it all makes so much sense now.
[identity profile] thrupenny.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:40 pm (UTC)
Totally OT, but I wanted to just express my love for your icon!
[identity profile] kabeyk.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 02:55 pm (UTC)
Isn't it wonderful! Heh. I stole it off the official website (having fiddled it a bit in Photoshop) and it will be my default icon until the election is over. Feel free to steal it and spread the word!
kx
[identity profile] thrupenny.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 03:02 pm (UTC)
Ooh, thanks! I may just do that. It's probably stupid but I'm always surprised to come across a fellow Brit in this fandom, let alone someone who shares my political sympathies. Roll on May 5th!
[identity profile] kabeyk.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 03:09 pm (UTC)
There are actually more Brits than you think, and a surprising amount of my f-list are Brits, and I know at least one of them is a Lib Dem voter. Woo! I always felt a bit left-out because Fiction Alley seemed to be mainly Americans, but Lj is much more varied thankfully, and there are people who don't get confused about the difference between trousers and pants when reading my fic!
I actually got the idea to make the icon after seeing someone else who had a Lib Dem icon. And ooh, I have Ravenclaw icons too! (didn't make them though)
kx
[identity profile] thrupenny.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 03:46 pm (UTC)
Ah yes, the trousers-pants problem. I can't count how many times I've had to explain that one, or been confused myself. Anyway, do you mind if I friend you? No obligation to friend back, but I see you write Remus/Sirius which I can frankly never read enough of!
And, um, up Ravenclaw!
[identity profile] kabeyk.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 03:49 pm (UTC)
Of course I don't mind, that would be great! We're clearly both intelligent and right(or left)-minded people!
And yes, I write far too much R/S, heh.
This is sependiptious (well no, it's not. I just like the word, ahaha). I posted a rant on the ridiculousness of Cho!hate not two entries ago. It focused more on the hate of Cho than Katie, but was inspired by this wave of Katie!hate.
I haven't even looked at the pictures; I don't give a rat's arse what she looks like. I wouldn't care if Cho was played by Colin Farrell in drag. No matter what happens she isn't going to be the Cho inside my head, and ever since they made a tv serial of the Chronicles of Narnia I've had to live with that fact. If I had my way no book would ever make it to the big screen -- but that's another rant in itself.
All these people are acting in such an undignified manner! There is going to be nothing more mortifying when they wake up and realised what a joke they've made of themselves with all this blatant jealousy.
I hope you don't mind if I friend you? 0.0 (Yes, that emoticon was supposed to look endearingly pleading... dunno if it worked, though!)
[identity profile] mithborien.livejournal.com on April 25th, 2005 03:06 pm (UTC)
I accepted the fact that the movies were never going to be the same as the books a long time ago so that why I can just enjoy the prettiness of the movies and curl up with the book later.
The emoticon looks more surpised than anything but I have no objections to friending :D I shall friend you right back.
So, we may as well get it out of the way from the start -- are you in the Columbus club or the Cuaron -- also club, I cannot think up another synonym beginning with C. *cries*
Nah, I reckon this is suprised: @_@ Voila! Hark at my massive...emoticoning skillz.
I think I am in both clubs. There are things I liked that each of them did and things I didn't like. Of course, once GOF comes out I will probably like that one better and so on and so forth.
Committee, consulate, contingent? Want any more C words?
Except for the shocking lack of robes, mayhap.
CONTIGENT. THAT'S NICE. *beams*
On a forum that I'm at, there was a topic about the same exact thing and I find it totally rediculous! It's not Katie's fault that she plays a role that everyone wants. She was lucky enough to get it and I acually went to her main website and she seems like a decent enough person.
Gosh, it does almost make me feel bad to be a HP fan. :( Aww poor Katie, I can only imagine the hurt that she feels about all of this. I can't wait to see how she does in GOF that will be very interesting to see how she does her role.
