So I just found out yesterday that Sin City is supposedly going to be release here a week after Star Wars comes out. Does anyone else agree with me that that is really bad marketing. Seriously. Only a week? After Star Wars? WTF, people!
And what is even worse is that the US and god knows who else already have the movie out so why the bloody fuck does Australia get stuff so late. Does the fact that we are on the other side of the world mean that the actual film takes longer to be shipped over because that is just about the only explanation I can come up with. I mean, sure, you may want to stagger the premiers over a couple of days so the actors can attend all the main ones but I hardly think Australia, let alone Perth, will be the recipient of one of those star studded events so me give the BLOODY FUCKING MOVIE! But no, it's going to be shown just after Star Wars, will recieve probably a limited amount of marketing and be reviewed as a flop because no one came to see it. Big fucking surprise.
Here's an idea, maybe if you released things at the same time and advertise shows and movies properly people will go see them because they haven't been told the ending already from those who saw the movie more than a month ago. Honestly, it can't be hard to release things at the same time. It will be done for Star Wars but then of course, that would be because it's STAR WARS, one of the few science fiction endeavours that had become decidedly mainstream, while science fiction and fantasy still appear to be taboo or at least midly distasteful.
Ah yes, science fiction and fantasy, the genre that nobody knows about in Australia because it gets treated like crap. Movies premiered a month late, TV shows shown at a late hour (if, of course, they are shown at all) and little to no promotion. You know, maybe if people knew about these shows they would watch them. Call me crazy, but airing a show when the TV guide says it isn't on seems like a pretty stupid way of getting people to watch. Even shows that were made here in a Australia (cough, Farscape, cough) recieved a bad showing despite Channel Nine being somehow involved in the production process and despite calling the show a 'scifi slam' in the only ad I can ever remember them having for it.
But hey, who am I to complain or make suggestions. It's not like the Lord of the Rings trilogy made any money. It's not due to any effort on the fans part that Farscape was brought back for a mini series after the series was cancelled. It's not like George Lucas made a science fiction trilogy that changed the course of movie making. And it's not like J. K. Rowling is now richer than the Queen.
Of course not. All those TV programmers, schedulers and the like are right. Science fiction and fantasy are genres that deserved to be treated like nothing more than bull shit. It's not like any good came of them, is there?
