Behold my thoughts...

Overall, the movie was better than I thought it was going to be but it felt a little emotionally flat. Part of that is because it feels very much like a "Part 1" movie and secondly because I don't think anyone who disappeared in the final act is actually going to stay dead. Most of them have sequels to be in!

But here are my thoughts on each character.

Steve
  • STEEB! He's totally still my favourite!
  • I also absolutely thought he was going to die so yay that he didn't but this just means I am assuming he's dying in Avengers 4.
  • He also felt underused, like he was just there to say lines and kick ass. Which normally wouldn't be an issue because this is after all a huge ensemble movie, but since I still feel like Steve (and the other related Cap characters) got short changed by Cap 3 turning in to an Avengers movie, it kinda sucks.
  • Hair and beard were A+ though
  • Somewhat amused by the fact that him and T'Challa both outran everyone when charging in to battle
  • He did have a hug with Bucky (yay!) when they reunited but that felt especially rushed. It was more of a hug you give a friend that you haven't seen in a while not the hug you give your best friend who you thought was dead but turned out to be alive after being horribly tortured for decades and is also the only link to your past and who you were before Captain America and who decided to freeze themselves instead of staying with you! It was a bro hug. There was no clinging or stroking each other's perfect hair.
  • I'm also annoyed because the Russo brothers said that Steve and Bucky's story continued on in Infinity War and it well, really didn't. They had a couple of scenes together but they were more about just the plot.
  • It also seemed like Steve was more upset that Vision died rather than Bucky and Sam. When Bucky disappeared it was more like Steve was confused as to how this person disappeared in front of him rather than it was BUCKY! DYING AGAIN!
Bucky
  • Delightful seeing him living the farm life. Are to assume he was healed and was just hanging out in Wakanda and hadn't contacted Steve yet? Totally understand needing time to heal, but I would also like the fic plz
  • Hair and beard were A+++
  • His new arm looks goooooorgeous! Totally should have had Shuri there to fit it for him. That way we could have seen more of Shuri as well
  • Amusing to see him pick up Rocket and do the double gun thing. Also amusing to hear Rocket's line about buying his arm.
  • I don't believe he's dead because I would assume Marvel want Bucky in reserve in case they want to do another set of Captain America movies and also it seems a waste to name him as the White Wolf if there isn't going to be a future movie that explains it
Sam
  • Seemed to be barely in it
  • Beard was A+
  • I don't think he actually talked to Steve at all... :(
  • I also really like Sam but I don't really have much to say because I honestly don't remember him being in a lot of scenes
  • I also don't believe he's dead because fuck you Marvel
Natasha
  • Was in the movie but didn't really seem to do much or be a part of anything... unless I am totally misremembering things
  • I kinda feel like the characters who don't have solo movies, let alone solo trilogies should get a little more screen time in the ensemble movies
  • Also confused as to why she seemed so upset that Vision was dead, unless it was more the general horror of well, we're fucked now
  • It was cool to see her and Okoye and Wanda fighting together but it also reminded me of the thing where you always see the female heroes only fighting the female villains
  • I really liked her outfit though
T'Challa, Okoye & Shuri
  • Always a pleasure to see
  • Didn't see enough of them though
  • Okoye's sense of humour is still a delight
  • I don't have much more to say about them. Which is I think is a theme for a lot of characters, like they were there, they were super cool but so much is happening that there isn't time to do anything other than push the plot forward
  • I really hope Wakanda doesn't get destroyed in the future or anything
Thor & Loki
  • Thor has always been a favourite so it was great to see more of him
  • Speaking of seeing more of him, that star should have totally burnt the clothes of fhis back. I'm just saying!
  • I kinda figured Heimdall was going to die so sad to see him go but not unsurprised
  • I always enjoyed Loki as a character so I'm not that upset that he is dead. More upset to see Thor react to his death. I also think he is actually dead unless the powers that be change their mind as resurrect him
  • No sign of Valkyrie. I hope that means she is alive and wasn't on the ship. I will be super pissed if she is dead.
  • It was also cool to see the Dwarves actually be giants though.
Gamora & Nebula
  • Speaking of, I am super pissed that Gamora died, especially in that way. I know it wasn't exactly a situation of a woman dying to give a man pain but it kinda felt that way. And I am just sick of seeing cool female characters die. But I don't think she is actually dead so I am not that sad about it yet.
  • But I did like her story and I liked how she didn't hesitate to kill Thanos (everyone else take notes, this is what you do when you have to kill someone you love to save the universe, you don't hesitate)
  • Amusing to see the Red Skull as the guardian of the Soul Stone. That was probably the only time I was actually surprised to be honest.
  • The only characters I really cared about in GOTG were Gamora and Nebula so yay to see them again.
Starlord and the other Guardians
  • I enjoy Starlord more for the fact that he is played by Chris Pratt than anything else
  • I also like Drax, Rocket, Groot and Mantis but its more of a cool, these characters are here now talking to these other characters than anything else
  • Annoyed that Peter couldn't keep his shit in check long enough for the other to pull the Gauntlet off. Like it was a good plan! And they were so close! Come on, man!
  • I also just watched GOTG2 over the weekend as well to catch up which was pretty fun
Tony
  • Still kinda hate Tony's character from Civil War and Homecoming but it's not that I particularly hate him, it just feels like he's either written badly to serve the plot or he makes super bad choices and no one (not the other characters or the movie itself) seem to realise this
  • But I did enjoy Tony in this movie
  • Seeing him interact with Spider Man and the Guardians and just be endlessly frustrated was really funny though (this is how people feel when they talk to you, Tony!)
  • His new armor is super cool and I'm not sure if that arc reactor was actually embedded in his chest or not but I was sad when he had it removed (only for the reason it was cool)
  • I feel like Tony is also someone that is going to die in Avengers 4 but I don't know if Marvel are willing to lose the opportunity to put him in every single movie
Peter
  • I actually only watched Homecoming over the weekend in preparation for Infinity War because I was putting it off based on how much Spider Man annoyed me in Civil War (not so much the character itself because I do love Tom Holland but how out of place he was in a movie that was supposed to be about Captain America, and how it was suddenly okay for Tony to bring a 15 year old to a gun fight, and how they used Spider Man's theme song over the credits, and yeah I am still bitter about Civil War)
  • But I do love Peter himself, it's not the character's fault the makers of these movies make stupid choices (actually that probably applies to all characters ever)
  • His interactions with anyone were all A+
  • And I did get sad in his "death" scene even though I know it's totally not going to last
Dr Strange
  • I also only watched Doctor Strange over the weekend and while it was a decent movie it didn't make me care about Doctor Strange at all (oh, we're using our made up names)
  • I also feel like if it's possible to destroy an Infinity Stone why did they not destroy the Time Stone first? Like it feels like that is the main stone to get because then when you are trying to get the other stones you can just undo things until you suceed
Rhodey
  • Is apparently going to be court-martialed now...
  • Because he doesn't care about following the Accords now...
  • Ugh, Civil War was so fucking stupid. Like oversight is definitely important and definitely needed but the Accords themselves made no sense and there were so many plot holes
  • And everyone still just does what they want anyway
Bruce
  • My feelings are neutral on Bruce. I enjoy the character but also hate any mention of the Bruce/Nat romance.
  • I can only assume the Hulk didn't want to come out because he was scared of Thanos? Which I think they totally should have showed because that would freak everyone out. Someone the Hulk is scared of?
Vision
  • I never cared that much about Vision :(
  • Sucks to be him I guess
Wanda
  • I liked Wanda more than Vision but seriously, if her powers are that strong she should totally be out on the battlefield
Thanos & Crew
  • They were cool, I guess
  • I don't really remember the henchmen's names but I think I liked them more than Thanos himself
  • Thanos was a more developed villain than the norm which was good
  • But I think his solution to overpopulation, while sure, it works, is still stupid, evil and arrogant. And not really a solution since the same thing is simply going to happen again however many centuries later. Doesn't really address the causes of overpopulation
  • I would have much rather have the comics motivation where he was in love with Death
Hawkeye
  • Was not in the movie!
  • I don't know if he got cut or he never was to begin with. I was looking through the cast list on IMDB to work out whether I forgot anyone and he's credited there along with the actress for his wife so *shrugs*
  • Ant-Man is also in the credits but we didn't see him either. I know he's in Avengers 4 though. In fact looking through the credits shows a lot of people who weren't in the movie so maybe it's a fake-out.
Credits Scene
  • There was only one credits scene (that we got in Australia at least) at the very end
  • Which was Fury and Maria Hill in a car together who also both disappear
  • But before Fury disappears he manages to send a message (on what looks like a retro pager, lol) and then on the screen the Captain Marvel symbol pops up
  • I don't know much about Captain Marvel but I assume she'll be helping in Avengers 4
Overall

I feel like it was a better movie than what the above suggests. I think the Russo brothers did a really good job of creating a story that involves so many characters but after 10 years of Marvel movies, where you have been with these characters for so long, where you have felt attached to these characters for so long, a movie that focuses on the plot instead of the characters is always going to fall flat.

I feel the ending with half the population disappearing in a puff of smoke would have been a lot more heart wrenching if a) it was the people whose contracts are up because those are the ones who you don't know if they are staying dead. Like I know there is going to be a Black Panther sequel, Spiderman sequel, a GOTG Vol. 3. None of their deaths seem permanent so I have no reason to mourn. Which sucks a little because I do enjoy having feelings at movies. Or b) we saw everyone reacting to their "deaths" more. Like Spider-Man dying was super sad but I didn't get that same feeling of sadness or panic from anyone else.

But even so, the movie feels very much like a "Part 1" even if its not explicitly named so. Even if the people who disappeared were the ones who don't have sequels lined up, I still don't think the deaths would feel real because you know there is another movie coming.

On the other hand, if these people do in fact stay permanently dead I am going to be super pissed off because a lot of them didn't get the send off they deserved. (Another reason I don't think they will stay dead, they would have gotten better death scenes.)

I do think people will die for real in Avengers 4 though.

So overall, yay! But I didn't get that hyped up feeling you get when you leave a cinema after an awesome movie. Which sucks. Maybe I need to see it again.

I still have a bunch of Marvel fanvids that I want to make, which I was actually scared that the movie would kill all my motivation to do so. So double yay!
