So I totally saw this tonight and I absolutely loved it. I am probably biased since I loved the books but I think they did a fabulous job!
My thoughts, in dot points, since I don't think I can critique things properly.
The Good!
1) Katniss! I loved Jennifer Lawrence portrayal of her. Just the perfect blend of strengths and flaws. "Thank you for your consideration!"
2) The other characters were fantastic as well. Peeta! And Cinna and Haymitch and Effie ("That's mahogany!). Gale was really explored a lot but I liked what I saw (although I prefer Katniss/Peeta then Katniss/Gale (because it all comes down to shipping, doesn't it?)). I think everyone was fantastically cast.
3) The Capitol! So much COLOUR! And so much uncaring! They are just cheering these kids deaths and everyone thinks it is the best thing ever! It was just a really horrific contrast which I think was shown well.
4) The "love" triangle between Katniss, Peeta and Gale. I was worried they were going to make this in to a bigger thing but they kept close to the books thankfully. It wasn't so much a triangle but rather, yeah, these guys like Katniss but she doesn't have time for this, there are more important things going on.
5) The camera-work. I wouldn't say I was cut out to critique camera-work but I liked the way they filmed this even if the shaky cam was a little too shaky in the beginning. And I can't wait to vid some of these scenes.
The Bad (or rather not as good)
1) The Arena. Maybe because I knew exactly what was coming but the action in the games wasn't as intense as it was when reading the books. I'm kinda sad that the dogs (I forget what they were actually called in the books. Mutts?) at the end didn't have the dead contestants faces but I suppose that was a little too horrific for the rating.
I am probably forgetting things but yeah, I really did enjoy this movie. I do wonder how much someone would like it if they hadn't read the books but *shrug*
But OMG, I can finally make my Hunger Games vid to the song that has been sitting in my head for over a year, just waiting for this movie to come out. Come on internets, give me some viddable footage. Don't fail me now!
